Energy Medicine: What is it and Why Should it Matter to YOU?May 05, 2020
3 insights to managing your health from within
“You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.” Oprah Winfrey
As you know, I’m extremely passionate about holistic health. I love helping people realize that being healthy is not simply about taking care of the physical body. Maximizing your well-being includes investing in caring for your body, mind, and spirit and energy is the field that connects everything. Think of it like, ‘the force is within you!
In my coaching practice, I blend eastern and western techniques to give my clients several perspectives on how to get the most out of their lives. One health approach that I follow closely is energy medicine. I practice this through Tai chi, Qigong and Shinrin-yoku 森林浴. or Forest Bathing but also in thought and belief systems. We’ll dive much deeper in future posts!
The concept of energy healing goes back over 4000 years to an ancient Indian tradition of prana, the breath of life, based on the idea that universal energy is a source of every life form. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective call this Qi or Ch’i (pronounced: chee) and is composed of opposing Yin & Yang energies. It is the balance of this that helps us achieve optimal health on many levels.
“The Universe is one indivisible, dynamic whole in which energy and matter are so deeply entangled it is impossible to consider them as independent elements.” Bruce H. Lipton
Energy medicine is a relatively new name to this area of holistic health. Many pioneers, such as Donna Eden at the age of 27 years old, decided to take ownership of her health when western medicine gave up on her. She had multiple sclerosis and was told by several medical professionals that her prognosis was not good.
Donna began to focus her body’s energy on self-healing, 40 years later, she is teaching tens of thousands of others what she discovered – that by aligning mind and body, you can tap into incredible healing power without modern medicine.
Donna and others, like Beverly Rubik (PhD) and Dr Bruce Lipton attracted my attention to this area. Beverly focuses on the spiritual side of healing and studies the subtle energetics of living organizations. Dr Bruce Lipton adds a layer of science meeting spirituality to the ‘field’ of energy we are a part of for transformation and healing. And that’s just the beginning!
“When all your energies are brought into harmony, your body flourishes. And when your body flourishes, your soul has a soil in which it can blossom in the world. These are the ultimate reasons for energy medicine—to prepare the soil and nurture the blossom.” Donna Eden
There are different perspectives of energy medicine and Donna describes nine different energy systems in the body from chakras to Meridians (more detail at another time). If we can learn how to work with our internal energy systems, we can facilitate healing without relying on invasive, costly, or burdensome health interventions. We can enhance the mind-body connection and increase vitality in our lives in a more natural way.
Energy medicine isn’t meant to replace western medicine. However, it does complement it powerfully.
We’ve grown accustomed to “crisis-intervention” medicine – we wait until something is wrong with our bodies and then seek treatment. As a result, we are overmedicated and over-reliant on pharmaceuticals today. This is especially true when it comes to treating sleep issues.
The CDC estimates that between 50-70 million people in America suffer from some form of sleep deprivation. Nine million people in the country use sleep aids. Unfortunately, these treatments don’t actually induce natural sleep – they are mere “band-aids” that cover up the real problem.
“Sleep is an investment in the energy you need to be effective tomorrow.” Tom Rath
We can apply many of energy medicine’s lessons directly to what we do at goodlifesleep. I believe that each and every one of you can unlock the very best versions of yourselves by sleeping better on a nightly basis – all you have to do is set your intention on healing this aspect of your health that is broken!
Sleep is essential for our mental, physical, and emotional health. So many of us disregard sleep as a necessary evil in today’s overly busy culture, forget that sleep enhances your immune system among many other benefits during these COVID-19 times!
We forget that healthy sleep can empower us in so many ways. And, fortunately, we don’t have to take various combinations of medicines to “fix” our sleep problems. We can follow energy medicine’s example and channel our energy more intentionally towards revitalizing our relationship with sleep.
The coronavirus pandemic has forced many of you into an unwanted sabbatical. I know a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet or have lost steady incomes in the last few weeks. It’s important during this time to not fall into unhealthy rhythms.
Instead, use the extra time you have to heal your relationship with sleep, especially if your pre-coronavirus life was marked by constant sleep deprivation.
Take inspiration from Donna Eden, Beverly Rubik and Dr Bruce Lipton and create an intention for better sleep TODAY. Feel empowered to address sleep troubles you’ve carried for years. Re-establish healthy patterns and carry those into post-COVID life.
“Everything is energy. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” Albert Einstein
Here are three insights to guide your ‘energy’ to sleep well :
How is the energy in your life different today than it was before the coronavirus pandemic?
Our emotions are key to our health because I believe that the energy of fear is more dangerous than this pandemic. Make gratitude a practice despite circumstances. See the light and the dark.
When we get extended breaks from “reality,” it gives us an opportunity to evaluate what our lives are normally like on a daily basis. Many people are craving a sense of normalcy.
Assess your normal life from the outside in so that you know what you should and shouldn’t go back to when we get through this time. We have a unique opportunity to do so right now.
“Awakening is not changing who you are but discarding who you are not” Deepak Chopra
How are you staying healthy during this time?
Although the coronavirus pandemic is forcing us all to think about our physical health, I want to make sure you are maintaining your mental and spiritual health as well. The temptation for many people right now is to escape reality with more TV and social media.
Instead, focus on eating fresh local fruit and vegetables, get outside and walk when and if you can and keep a consistent schedule. Focus on the original Face Time, face to face with your family (and friends online) Don’t let the chaos of the outside world into your personal life and wellbeing.
Practice healthy sleep every night, meditate, relax into a ‘soft landing’. Do what you need to do to send ripples of positivity throughout your spheres of influence, even at a distance.
“Each of us have our own unique rhythm, connect with it and align with Nature’s music” Mag
What new healthy rhythms can you take with you after this season?
Many of us have margin to fill right now. Fill that margin with positive behaviours and commit to carrying those actions through once we return to normal life such as being more grateful to others, to the planet for the clean air, water & food it provides.
If you are finally getting into a good sleep rhythm now because you have more time and fewer work obligations, don’t let that fall wayside! Become more aware of your own rhythms with yourself, with others and the rhythm of your community, in that order!
Stay strong, set your intention and energy on keeping those habits up, no matter how much the world tries to encroach on your personal life again.
