It’s been a tough year for many of us and I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about it! I started this year full of hope and excitement and began my videos series I called 2020 Innervisions, less about sight and more about insight. So, what has been an insight for you as we come upon the end of the first half of this year?

The photo above is of my second cousin who passed at such a young age, someone I watched from a distance and had not seen since she was a baby. Of all the things going on in this world today, recent news of her touched my heart and I wanted to dedicate this to her, honour her spirit that I never had a chance to know and touch on something we have shared and not just our blood relations.

You see, Jessica struggled silently about her bipolar depression, alcoholism and life challenges for much of her life. I never knew looking at photos of her lovely, beautiful smile, those big, dark Filipina eyes and witnessing the joyful side of her life raising her young son and being seemingly happily married. We all have a side of us that only shows only our best side, never asks for help and will never admit to having a problem. We shared this in common. 


Regardless of what challenge you are facing right now, know that it has not come to stay. It has come to pass. During these times, do what you can with what you have, and ask for help if needed. Find ways to replenish your energy, strengthen your faith and fortify yourself from the inside out.”   adapted from Les Brown 


I am reminded of a time when I felt this at a young age, that I was somehow different, and I didn’t want to be here on this earth. Depression was an experience I knew well even into adulthood, almost as much as Jessica did. Why didn’t we talk about this as a family? Why is there this feeling of shame when we actually need each other more than anything at that moment? What can we do to change this paradigm?

Much of our ‘programming’ comes from our parents but you knew that already!  Bless them but that doesn’t always work for me as I adopt more a growth mindset and choose not to ‘spiritually bypass’ my own needs, self-care and own my choices. Simple, but not an easy thing to do as we all struggle with our own shit! If we don’t learn this life lesson, we can ride that rollercoaster forever.

I’m not saying that our parents are part of the problem and not the solution. What I’m trying to say is that once we realise we all have many more choices than we think, learn from them whether right or wrong, that we can ask for help as a sign of strength, the better abilities, Life Skills and health & happiness we’ll experience. I can only hold a memory of her and not my beautiful cousin.

Practice is derived from Latin and later is derived from ‘practical work’ so there is indeed work to do! Keep it simple and do this for 5 minutes every day to help you remember who you are.


  1. Sleep well. Simple. Get 7-9 hrs every night!
  2.  Take a deep breath and be grateful as soon as you’re conscious, in that dreamlike state of consciousness. Think of 3       things each morning to be grateful for.
  3. Do everything with love. Find your Ikigai (生き甲斐) or your life purpose.
